Letters Home
A Remembrance Day 1999 Project
by the New Horizons School Grades 4/5 Class

The Grades 4/5 Class teacher told a moving story about her Grandfather who was seriously wounded at Vimy Ridge. The students were encouraged to write a poem or letter about Remembrance Day. Some of the students chose to write a letter home to their parents, as if they were soldiers fighting on the front, while others chose to write poems about Remembrance Day.

        Dear Mom and Dad,

I have been assigned to the Dragon Squadron to go fight the Germans. The Dragon Squad is an airplane squadron. I'm a gunner on board. We've hit 17 planes in the last 5 years but I'm getting home sick.

We left to Germany in August 1939. Our troops set up camp 1.5 miles from the Enemy's camp. The planes soared overhead and were ready to attack. We called a cease-fire on Christmas day and played cards and smoked. At midnight the battle raged again. The gunners were ready and the trenches were dug once again and our troops were lined up for battle.

When is this wretched war going to be over ???????

        Love,
        Your son,
        Robert.
