A
fter Operation Archer, Rotation 1, one Star of Military Valour and three Medals of Military Valour were awarded. The decorations were created in 1993, but nobody had earned one until 2006.
T
he recipients were Sergeant Patrick Tower, Sgt Michael Denine, Master Corporal Collin Fitzgerald, and Corporal Jason Lamont. They are all proud of their awards, but they are humble. They all say that they feel the awards are not for their individual deeds, but rather representative of their platoons, their companies, their regiments, their trades.
T
he decorations represent the valour of their buddies, close friends, some of whom did not come home. Though soldiers may feel shy at being singled out, it is important that their stories be told.
T
he following four pages tell the stories of four brave soldiers, yet the words, like the medals, represent the deeds of so many more, most of whose names will never be known to the wider public.
