11) Apeldoorn
There had never been a medal for serving in the war in Holland. In 1984-85 the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Holland had 500 beautiful medallions made up called the "Erasmus Medallion". A tribute to the Liberators of Holland in the war. The mayor of Apeldoorn presented Bill with this medallion at a special meeting at his office with Bill's host Gerrit Ham at his side. A most wonderful memory.
Bill also toured the Grosbeek and Holten Veterans Cemeteries, wonderfully cared for by the Dutch and noted that the ages of all the soldiers buried there were 18 and 19 years old. What a terrible loss.
